Postcards from Warnemunde (Berlin)

Eurodam called at Warnemunde, Germany today. Warnemunde is the port for Berlin, and guests were able to visit some historic sites. Thanks to Pam’s father, Joseph Kern, for sending in his photos.

Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to a crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. This point is located at the junction of Friedrichstraße with Zimmerstraße and Mauerstraße (which coincidentally means ‘Wall Street’).

The Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin. It is the only remaining gate of a series through which one formerly entered Berlin. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees that formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs. It was commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm II as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791.
