Card Art: Statendam IV
Roland | March 21, 2008 at 2:24 pm | In Art on Eurodam |
This is the last in our series of paintings by Stephen Card that will adorn the stairwells of Eurodam. This piece is of Statendam IV, which was built in The Netherlands in 1956.
Statendam IV was 195.8 meters (642 feet) long and 24.6 meters (81 feet) at the beam with a draft of 8.4 meters (27.5 feet). The ship was named by HRH Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands, and and departed on Holland America’s first world cruise Jan. 7, 1958, from New York.
In 1986 Statendam IV was sold to Regency Cruise Lines and sailed Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean as Regent Star until 1995, when the ship was laid up in Piraeus, Greece, after Regent declared bankruptcy.

Should there be one more after this?
Your original post with the Eurodam painting said a series of 4, and we’ve only seen the 3.
I love the history lessons that are given with these. Was Statendam IV a sister to the Rotterdam V? They look VERY similar, with the exception of the stack.
Keep up the great work guys! The Blog remains wonderful! (Any info on the Cabanas mentioned by Stein kruse at the SeaTrade convention?)

You’re right! We can’t count. Look for another entry next week.
Rotterdam V entered service just two years after Statendam IV, but was built at a different shipyard. According to my source, they were not referred to as sister ships.

You are right Roland the Statendam was not a sister ship of the Rotterdam who was entering service (as you wrote) 2 years later. The ships where very different from each other. First and foremost different was size. The Rotterdam was over 14.000 grt bigger. But also the Rotterdam was build as National flagship she was the showcase of Dutch maritime engineering, interior design and modern art. The statendam how beautiful and elegant this vessel was a refined and improved design of the 1951/52 sister ships Maasdam and Ryndam.
